Is upgrade to m2 ngff ssd possible?

Hi,

I have an hp 8740w. I want to add on it another m2 ngff ssd 32gb to install on it linux, to not touch the main drive.

I want to know if this will be possible, considering that i will use ngff m2 to pci-e converter.

I also want to know if there is any way to install it full separately and not touch the windows mbr.

Lastly i want to know how safe is to use this converter for the laptop logic board?

The converter is that here:

Thanks in advance!

Your system has a standard 2.5" SATA drive. Where where you planning to install the M.2 drive?

Here's the service manual EliteBook 8740w

Thanks for your answer

I plan to install it on mpcie slot that have the WWAN 3G modem. And I find the adapter above. I also have already install a bigger ssd for my main OS , but i need separate ssd for the Linux. I read and this slot is mpcie, but i cant find anywhere if the adapter above is legit and safe to use.... I want to install m2 ssd 32gb that I randomly buy.

It likely won't work as the systems BIOS does not treat the slot as a generic PCI slot. Besides the phyical size of the adapter & SSD will exceed the space location the modem takes.

You do realize you can partition a HDD or SSD with multiple partitions which can support different OS's then using a boot loader to offer a means to select which OS to boot up makes more sense.

Yes , but this will update my MBR... I want to have it on another physical drive to not be single point of failure.

I will go with plan B and remove the dvd and install SSD :( . I like to have the dvd here! Then I will try to install Clover or Refit on that to check if will work. I hope that will work....
