How do you repair usb controller?

I bought a motherboard that works mostly except that the usb ports don’t work. I’ve tried plugging in a mouse to the ports and the mouse does not work. When I plug it into the port not attached to the motherboard, I get a power surge.

Is there any way to find the chip that controls the usb ports and replace it with a chip from another board?

@gregoryvenezia sure, anything is possible. Here is the challenge. WE need to know what motherboard your Lenovo uses. It will be printed right on the board, most commonly on the side that faces the keyboard :-)

We need this so we can determine if there are any schematics to identify the IC and find a replacement for it.

I have a soldering iron and a heat gun. I don’t know how to re-ball solder.

Did you check the USB power management setting in Device manager to see that the USB power hasn't been disabled?

Go to Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers > right click USB root hub entries (check all of them) > Properties > Power management and ensure that the checkbox which states "Allow the computer to turn off power to the device" is unchecked.

Also check in BIOS if there's a setting allowing the USB ports to be disabled.

What about the power surge?

Hi @gregoryvenezia

Here's a link to the schematics.

Do the USB ports show in Device Manager?

If so that indicates that the USB controller (it is integrated in the motherboard chipset and is not an individual USB controller) is working, up to a point anyway i.e. BIOS to USB controller is OK but not USB controller to USB port.

You will have to trace the 5V USB power supply and the data lines back from the USB ports using the schematic and check where they end up.
