How to replace the Proximity Sensor

All efforts to get the sensor working have failed, so I'm guessing it's defective. I don't see anything on your site, so is it combined with the camera or other sensors?

Hi, I read the same google article, but I used a different sensor app to test. (sensorkraken) I can get meaningful data from every other sensor I've probed, but the proximity sensor does not return any data.

I've wiped the sensor area clean and have reset all sensors via the debug menu, but nothing works.

I purchased this phone used and don't know the provenance, but it was at a good price because the screen has a 1/4" black circle (dead pixels), in the bottom left corner of the screen. The phone itself does not look like it was in any accident that would explain the black dot, but maybe the issues are somehow related even though they are located on opposite sides of the phone.

You indicate that the sensor is somewhere near the front facing camera, but would you think this is part of the screen itself, or mounted under it like the camera sensor? I'm not opposed to replacing the screen to kill two birds, but certainly want to make sure first.

Thanks!

Hi @usualfrog1778

Here's a teardown video that may help.

At 1:54 minutes into the video the cut out location for the proximity sensor in the display assembly is shown.

At 8:10 minutes into the video, the proximity sensor board is shown. I can't find a replacement board online so try and use the information that is stamped on the board itself to find a replacement. Unfortunately I cannot make out what is printed even when zoomed in.

Hi @usualfrog1778

You can check better than I can but looking at the Pixel 8 Pro repair guide which is on the ifixit website, on p.11 (of 240 pdf) the only mention of anything regarding the proximity sensor in the parts list, is the P- sensor grommet.

Looking further into this the grommet is located on the ANT-1 board (see p.28 for board shape and p.79 for location) The p/n for the ANT 1 board is G949-00706-01 (supplier examples only)

Do you think that the proximity sensor is on this board?

That was very helpful!

I believe I found the part, but I'm almost afraid of how inexpensive it is. ($.60) :P

Not sure about posting links here so won't, but it doesn't appear to be sold here which is unfortunate. Going to give it a go and cross my fingers.

Thanks!

@usualfrog1778 It's okay to post a link to the part you found; that way we can take a look and try to verify if that's going to be what you need.

I wasn't able to locate the part for sale in any of my usual haunts, but it is commonly sold for previous Pixel models so I'm sure at some point the aftermarket manufacturing industry will catch up.

So I'm unable to purchase it anyway since they only sell B2B. :https://www.mobilesentrix.com/proximity-...

If you have any other suggestions, I'd love to hear.

Thanks!

@usualfrog1778

You could always open the phone and check if the cable/cable connection between the sensor board and the system board is OK (at both ends).

Also search for the part number as shown on the board as well. If it is being used in other models you may find more suppliers that way, as these suppliers may not know that it is compatible with your model as well and therefore your model isn't listed by them.

I'm still looking into this, but in the meantime it appears Google has an app specifically designed to test the proximity sensor. I ran across the following information on a Google Pixel Phone Help support page here.

Pixel 8 proximity sensor not working - Google Pixel Community

Here's the gist of the response.

I'd start by running the test then come on back and let us know what it reports.

Also, I did run across another post on a Google site that says the proximity sensor is located just to the right of the front facing camera (#5 on the diagram).

Hi @jayeff ,

So I haven't been able to locate a board by the numbers, but it looks like the board itself isn't compatible with older models. I found a prox board for a pixel 7 pro and the board is shaped differently, but the sensor array itself looks identical. It's been 20 years since I've done any SMD soldering, but at least it's a backup plan.

What I don't want to do is to open up the device more than needed, so I'd like have a part available in case the actual sensor is defective. They want $18 for the board vs .60 wholesale, but it's an option. I reached out to the seller to see if they could source the proper board, but not holding my breath

Thanks for your continued support. Will let you know how it goes.

Just following up as promised. I replaced my screen and battery, but decided to wait until I had the correct part for the proximity sensor instead of tempting fate.

Thanks for the support.
