Usually this the result of either an incompatibility with the ram you are trying to use (I know of NO motherboards that will boot without RAM installed). Can you provide the model of your motherboard and the exact specifications of your RAM chips (there should be stickers on the chips with this info). I can help you better with this info.
I have never had a laptop key button stay repaired for long. If you want to use the built in keyboard I'd suggest that you replace it. Amazon has them forsale new and used ones. http://www.amazon.com/Eathtek-Acer-Aspire-ZA5-751H/dp/B008X09QC2 Another option I can suggest is that you get either a USB wireless keyboard and just not use the onboard keyboard. eBay has a nice one for $6.99 shipped (sold through Best Buy) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Insignia-Wireless-Keyboard-Black-/321877278023?hash=item4af1617d47:g:gWQA...
I hate giving this answer, but a quick search of eBay shows that you can purchase a used working GameCube Controller starting at $6.38 shipped. I think that you would be better off getting a good used controller to replace your defective one. Honestly that is the best answer in my opinion. John.
