Introduction
Passez à l'étape 1A first look inside Sony's dramatically redesigned, cooler, sleeker PlayStation 3 Slim! Also check out our PS3 Slim teardown video on YouTube!
Ce dont vous avez besoin

-
It's here! We got our dirty hands on a PS3 Slim a full day before it was set to arrive in the mail!
-
The box, just like the unit, is, well, slimmer.
-
Our free online editor makes it super-easy to publish step-by-step teardowns.
-
We host everything for free, and make it easy for you to have high-resolution photos, professional layout, and full-screen slideshows like ours!
-
-
-
On the front left, we have two USB ports, a hard drive indicator light, and a Wi-Fi indicator light.
-
Front right yields a slot-loading Blu-ray drive, power button, and eject button.
-
The back has a LAN connection, HDMI port, digital audio-out, multi-connector (RCA or component video) and a new type of power plug.
-
Owners of the current-gen PS3s will notice an absence of the rear manual power switch. All your powering needs are now served by the front power button.
-
-
-
Now that we've dispensed with the pleasantries, let's get into the meat of the subject, so to speak.
-
A blue Phillips screw is hidden beneath "the blue Phillips screw cover," as we call it. Remove this screw.
-
Next, remove the hard drive cover.
Next, remove the hard drive cover.
This should be like: Next, slide to hard drive cover sideways to remove it.
I agree, i was trying to force it outward but then i saw your comment and was able to remove it easily. Thanks

The drive enclosure has a metal pull tab attached to it. Pull on it to release the drive from the bay.
-
The 120 GB Toshiba drive, in all its glory. We have a feeling that it's going to be super-easy to upgrade this drive to 500GB...
Hi Guys! great site, thought I would check here before upgrading my PS3 HD to a 500GB. BUT, you guys have a 7200rpm HD linked in your steps, from what I have read, a 7200rpm HD can burn out your PS3 (or whatever the term is). 5400rpms seem to work fine, is there a way that you guys can confirm/dis-confirm that a 7200rpm drive can ruin your PS3? thanks for the great site!
Hi Idrain, you probably will not read this but might come handy for others. I just ugpraded my PS3 Slim (CECH-2504B) with a 1TB 7200rpm HDD out of my laptop. It works like a charm.
I am not an expert on this topic, though I have a strong basic knowledge about computer parts and their designs. I think the only possible downside to a 7200rpm HDD compared to a 5400rpm could be noise. But I think it will not be noticeable against the PS3 fan. And the newer HDDs are yet quieter every generation. So no, it cannot ruin your PS3 system.

Remove the three (or on some models, four) TR8 security Torx screws on the underside of the PS3 slim.
-
What's that, you say? Security screws? Yes, that's right. These screws have a pin in the center of them that prevents an ordinary Torx screwdriver from working. These screwdrivers are widely available, just not quite as easy to come by as a normal Torx.
-
Sony did this to prevent people like us from taking it apart.
-
This seems a little spiteful-- hardware hacking is a fine American tradition. No worries, we'll make sure it's easy for you to get these screwdrivers.
I have the CECH-2001A and, though you could probably get by with a T8H for the security screws, it appears to actually be T9H.
Great teardown BTW! Maybe add a bit about opening the Blu-ray drive?
Fun fact: I was able to remove the 4 torx bits with a very small flathead screwdriver. The head fit nicely between the pin and 2 of the 6 branches. The nice thing was, very little torque was required, to the point the screws were in no way damaged, and are very easily replaced.
If ya feel like breaking in, take a flathead and break the nubs off in the middle of the screws. Then from there, use a normal Torx screwdriver and turn c-clockwise. I used the Radioshack kit with my PS3.
-
-
-
De-warranty-izing and de-tabbing on the underside of the Slim ensue...
-
-
-
Seven Phillips screws need to be removed from the bottom.
-
Interestingly enough, the rubber pad on the front-right corner of the PS3 has no screw hidden underneath it. Imagine our surprise when we removed it!
-
-
-
Flip the PS3 over.
-
Wait for it, wait for it...
-
MEGA FAN revealed!
-
This 12V, 1.3A monster rivals the best fans found in desktop PC machines. Sony spared no expense.
My playstation 3 has recently stopped working and i am attempting to remove the cover and i simply can not do so i have triple checked if there are remaining screws and there are not any left nut what i can tell is that there is some bar that is holding the top and bottom cover together is there some way to somehow remove it? i have a playstation model CECH-3001B
There's an extra screw under the warranty void sticker near the front. Don't miss that one. If your case won't open that might be why.

Closeup of the massive fan and controller antennas.
-
This is a brushless DC motor, which is fairly standard for fans in devices like this. Brushless motors are quieter than more traditional fans, but require fine computer control to function. It is not a maglev fan like Apple is known to use, however.
-
The Bluetooth and WLAN antennas, intentionally three-dimensional in design, are attached to the lower case with Phillips screws.
Hi All,
I have bought a PS3 slim 320GB model no. CECH-2501B from Gamestop USA and I want to know if it will work directly at 240 volts?
It says only 120 volts in the manual and aslo on the PS3 console.
Thanks,
Pls send me an email: ogie_chengdu@yahoo.com
Hi Ifixt staff: I have a doubt about the new ps3 slim: Is this model presenting problems of overheating? with the fan that is inclued can the ps3 slim overheat? Greetings!
I fixed my overheat problem by making holes in the top cover to allow more airflow into the fan along with a good cleaning. My next step will be to make elevated feet and cooling holes in the bottom.... possibly an extra fan
that fan is actually not that big. it is smaller then the one in the old ps3 which is 120 mm
Citation de james42519 :

I don't think the size of the fan itself is what there referring to, i believe it is the size in relation to the device that it is in.
anyone knows if PS3 80 GB CECHL01 has an universal power supply?
This is a great find, thank you for posting this article. I have the CECH-2001A (120GB Slim) and I will move to Beijing, China this year. I've been concerned about power matters from the PS3, to my computer and LCD monitors... et cetera.
From what I understand with all of this I simply have to get a new power cord for my PS3 then? :) China's voltage is generally 220V, 50HZ, AC.

-
Disconnecting two power supply cables.
-
The AC inlet cable is devoid of a third 'ground' pin, surprising for a unit that draws nearly 250W.
Read that the Slim would use under 100W during full load, why would the supply need that amperage ?
You say the unit draws 250W, but it is far from that. Not even the power supply would allow that, its max. is 221W (18A@12V+0.9A@5.5V). The unit itself draws ~95W at max.! Just there is a large safety margin. (Not even the very first PS3 model drew more that 200W at max.)
Citation de Fameleaf :
Yes it is indeed a universal Powersupply. Picked the 250GB version from Amazon USA. It works perfectly in India. All you need to do is to change the power cable.
In India, you can ask for a good taperecorder cable in any electronics shop. This cable will do the job.
MODEL # I use is CECH-2001B.
Additional ref:
http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=3326 shows the PSU model number (EADP-220BB)

Removing the power supply. This is quite a bit smaller than the original PS3's power supply, and presumably has better thermal characteristics.
-
Much to the relief of users worldwide, the power supply is designed for inputs ranging from 100V to 240V AC.
Hi Guys, After reading through, I tested the PS3 slim at Malaysia. It works!! It works!!!
For second opinion,
I refer to this site for the serial number of the power supply

and what is the power supply in Malysia?
just trying to make sure i got this post right and I can plug my US bought ps3 slim in a 220v socket.
much appreciated.
thanks
By any chance... Do anyone know for sure if the PS3 Limited Edition Metal Gear Solid(the one that can read the PS2 games) has the power supply designed for inputs ranging from 100V to 240V AC ??? I have the USA version but Im living now on Europe and nobody has give me a clear answer yet.

I live in Argentina and was wondering if i could use my ps3slim 250gb that i bought in the us with an adapter NOT A TRANSFORMER cause the sockets here are different instead of buying a new power cord that would match the socket here.Or does it only work with the power cord from my region.220w in Argentina

Yes, it will work with a new power cord. Please read the other notes on the teardown, as this question has been answered at least ten times already.
Try remove the power supply screw about will not come because tightly screw down I don't know how take it out pls help asap
I did the same thing. I striped the screws. Can I get them out by drilling?

Digging a little deeper into the new power supply.
-
This is a startlingly compact unit. It will be interesting to see what the thermal dissipation is like.
-
This puppy cranks out 18 amps at 12V DC! Fingers beware.
Please please have a deeper look at the PSU and see if it works with 220/240V. I know it says 110/120V on the back, but the PSU might support 240V too. There is a big pricedifference from US to eg. Denmark so I would consider bringing one home on my next trip to the US if this will work. Thank you :)

Just to add to Andrew's post:
The power supply can accept a 240V AC input. Here's the hi-res version of the power supply specifications picture.
Now there's a new PlayStation 3 Slim with a 250GB hard drive. I know you've done the 120GB teardown, and found that it has a universal power supply. Does this hold true for the new 250GB? I work for Uncle Sam overseas and want to ensure it'll work if I plug it into the wall as is. Sure, I could use a step-down transformer, which would change the voltage from 220-240v to 110v, but it would do nothing to step-up the 50Hz current coming out of the wall to the 60Hz one in the U.S... and that could spell disaster for anything with a disk drive.

I've read that the US version works on 220/240V but anyone know about the Japanese version CECH2000A - the case says "100V @ 2.5 50/60 Hz".
I bought my Slim in Japan, and as I'll be moving back to Europe soon, I tried looking for that info on Japanese sites. This is what came up:
http://pocketnews.cocolog-nifty.com/pkns...
If you scroll down a bit you can see pictures of the power supply. Obviously the serial number is the same as with the US version and it also clearly says "100-240V". Hope that helped!
This certainly helped a lot as I bought my PS3 in Akihabara and brought back home to the Philippines (220v country).
Many thanks!

Guys,
Bought my PS3 Slim 7 days ago through Amazon. Model CECH2000A on it. It says it is 120V only, but works perfect with 220V in Israel. Only replaced the cable who just doesn't fit the wall. As simple as that. Sony just lies about it.

250GB (CECH-2001B) one also has a universal power supply. Had no issues connecting it to 240 volts in India. One has to use a Indian cable (tape recorder cable or a sony cybershot camera ac cable etc o Indian make).

All electronics work ONLY in DC and not AC that's what the power suppy is for , to convert AC to DC . DC does not have any frequency , so the input freq of 50 or 60 hz is immaterial
Hi All,
I have bought a PS3 slim 320GB model no. CECH-2501B from Gamestop USA on March 2011. It says only 120 volts in the manual and aslo on the PS3 console. I plug my PS3 directly to 220v here in my country (Philippines) and it work great. No step down transformer or adapter.

I am having a problem with this power supply, it is making a high pitch buzzing noise around the input area. Any suggestions what might be the cause of this problem?
1) People ask very stupid questions in the comments. 2) You didn’t show where the release clips are, as the rear ones seem to be a major pain in the butt. 3) Stop trying to seem “interesting” in your writing; people are reading the guides because of your novelist abilities; they’re reading it for the INFORMATION within. Common sense truly is dead.

This is the largest fan we've come across in a consumer electronics device of this size.
-
Sony is really taking cooling quite seriously.
-
The ~95 mm diameter 17 blade impeller was definitely designed with quiet in mind. It is extremely stiff and presumably made of ABS plastic.

Tape holding down antenna and power cables.
-
That tape is just begging to be ripped off.
-
We indulged.
I need an internal on off strap'cable
Perhaps for some slim models there is no tape such as mine, the rf shields and plastic has indents guiding the wires its self, so if yours is like this no worries take it nice and slow!
-
-
-
...and the Blu-ray drive comes right out.
-
This drive is still quite large, and takes up the bulk of the space inside the PS3.
-
We disassembled the drive, and found that it appears to be a proprietary Sony-manufactured part.
Citation de Jake1y :
Whats the cr2032 battery for? Does ever need to be replaced?
It's to keep the system's internal clock running. It should be replaced when it runs out, but that will probably take years to do (and even if you don't, the lack of a clock isn't so bad).
Hello i bought the PS3 Slim 120GB and it says on the PS3 back that it supports 120V~2.1A - 60Hz i live in Israel and the power supply here is 220v i i have a converter that have a Fuse Protection Input: 220 or 110 AC 50W Output: 110 or 220 AC 50/60Hz can i use it in Israel with that? and i saw that u said that i only need to change the power cord and it will work in 220v, are you sure that its right?? couse people told me that if i'll do that with 220v cord the muchine can blow up
What interface does the drive use? SATA, or a proprietary connection?
Whats the difference between the 200 drive and the 300?
Between the two pictures, theres the cover removed. how about some details about that additional step.

-
More connectors and screws to unplug/unscrew.
-
The design aesthetic of this machine is quite a bit more bare-bones-functional than Apple's, but is still beautiful in its own way.
-
Several components, including the AC power inlet, are simply held to the unit by the pressure of the screws connecting the top and bottom cases.
-

-
Separating the metal electromagnetic interference shield from the logic board.
This step might need some “force” if the thermal paste has stuck on the processors. You will know it if the plate doesn’t come out easily (and you removed all screws ofc)
What are the dimensions (HxWxD) of the system board with the fan shroud and EMI shielding intact?
Toying with the idea of installing it into a Toshiba X205 laptop casing for a semi portable model. If I could make a 3D dummy to test fit I could figure if it is possible at all.
Thanks!

That's it for the disassembly, but we'll continue to post board photos and analysis as the information pours in.
-
The logic board. Sony's going green on the inside, to reflect their commitment to the environment.
-
We've never seen cool snowflake-like patterns in the thermal paste after we removed a heat sink before. This may indicate that the thermal paste was overapplied or that it was not distributed evenly.
-
If you look closely at the thermal paste, you'll see it is a fractal!
Mine is 8 years old. Never broke and is on the default paste The paste isn’t that bad then

The Cell processor looks very spiffy under our lights.
-
We didn't think it was possible to synthesize reality, but the RSX chip (from an Acura?!) proves us wrong.

Citation de katboi :
That is Beautiful. Do you have a picture from a better angle? Like the one of the RSX.
Unfortunately, the laser etching on the face of the cell processor is nearly invisible when viewed straight-on like in the RSX picture. We had a hard enough time making the text visible on the shot we have (notice the reflection on the board).
Citation de razin :
I want know,Cell still use 7 SPE or by advantage of 45nm use 8 SPE.
I'm going to guess it still uses seven, it may only have seven SPE on die this time though. Adding a couple additional features on a new version of an older console has a habit of making owners of the older version angry. It would result in developers having to add additional time for development on games for each console version, another non-starter.
BTW, where are the GDDR3 chips that should be present near the RSX?
Interesting how the chip is labelled 'Reality Synthesizer'
IIRC the equivalent chip on the PS2 was labelled 'Emotion Engine' I always figured that was what made my PS2 so temporomental :P (ok so I never had a PS2, but you get my point)
How is the RSX Reality synthesizer from Acura? I don't see any other brand than Sony on it.

I want to know... the PS3 slimmer versio has universal power supply like the phat ps3? (100 to 240v)
It's kind of pointless to do a scale comparison on that, because the actual chip is not visible. The actual chip is much smaller and what you are seeing is just a heat spreader (which is not silicon BTW) on top of the Cell chip and RSX. The Cell processor in this Slim is manufactured with the 45nm process and is 115mm2 in size. A tech site should know when looking at a huge thing like that heat spreader, that it's not an actual chip. A silicon chip of that size would cost enormously.

Just a question.. Where's the wifi card? And can I update it to the new wifi ac? Id love to have gigabit speeds on my Sony.

Hi, I am about to order a PS3 power Ribbon for mine because i have an issue that just started. When you turn it on, it cuts off and you have to keep turning it on over and over until it finally stays on. This is now all the time from being powered off and back on. It literally just started a few days ago. So after some research it looks like it could be the power/eject ribbon. My model number is CECH-2001A. In which picture is the ribbon that needs to be replaced? Is it 18? Thanks!
I am unable to remove my ps3 cover it seems there is a bar of some sort connecting the top and the bottom of my ps3 cover and bottom its located to the left of the fan. It is not allowing me to remove it and i have tripple checked for remaining screws and there are none. My playstation model is CECH-3001B i dont know if this is specific to this model or what but i just know i cannot find a youtube video for my model so if you can offer any help it would be greatly appreiciated
Plz note the screw under the warranty-label next to the blue screw...

Thanks
Thank you..... ;)

Less humor and BSery, please. I’ve noticed that iFixit likes to sprinkle humor in with their guides and — while it might tickle some in the right way — it’s not helpful (nor wanted) for those of us who are using these guides as…well, GUIDES.
This is a teardown, not a repair guide. If you need to repair your PS3 Slim, then there are plenty of repair and replacement guides you can follow. Again, this is not a guide and therefor should not be taken as seriously as you are.
Great write up. Thank you
I have a model 3003a and it's really hard to find the correct video or manual for teardown and reassembly. Any tips?
My only issue with this guide is that it's wrong in one part, where it says
Those three T8 security Torx screws seem to be the only non-Phillips head fasteners on the entire device.
This is false, since they aren't actually Phillips screws, but JIS screws, added to the fact that JIS screws use softer metal, and you have a recipe for stripped screws.
Hello,

Ok, I can finally say that a ps3 slim, bought in the US (says on the cover that it only supports 110v), is working on 220v.
I plugged it just now and it works!
thanks to you guys.
enjoy

mentioned that although its written a 110 V but it supports 220V or in other words it got a universal power supply built in.i very hardly managed to buy a ps3 two months ago from USA.and brought back it back with me in here (Pakistan) here the voltage 220 V.
So i wanted to know that are u really really sure that it got a universal power supply and it ok plug it in directly in here???

No modchip now success. this machine will be a flop unless someone finds a means to mod it.

Thx for the precise answer, I had the same exact question and was wondering if the claims of a universal supply were for some other version of the PS3 slim. Arguably it would be sort of crazy for Sony to produce many different power supplies when a universal one would just work.

Why would someone want to mod a console ? To help out piracy?

Hi, I am from Fiji Islands. We use 240v here. My relative is getting the PS3 Slim for me from USA. So the PS3 slim will work here in Fiji with no problems rite??? or do i need a step up transformer to be sure?? thanks alot !!

Does the power unit above is same with the one inside the new PS3 sold in Japan? I plan to buy one in Tokyo and bring it home. My country uses 220v. Thank you for your help!

Do you know anything about the cracking noise that a lot of the slims are making? Many people say it's just the noise of the plastic heating up and expanding after you turn it on. Could this "expanding" cause something inside the ps3 to crack or break?

I answer this myself. The unit I bought in Japan works just fine, Though at the back of the unit it is written 110v only!

Just a quick question. Can you please look up when the console you took apart was made? It should state it on the bottom of the long sticker in step 8.

It will work anywhere in the world. The main power supply in any PS3 console is UNIVERSAL.

Does anyone know about that blu-ray disc that came with the console? I bought a 250gb PS3 from wal-mart and there wasn't one in the package.

There really isn't much modding that can be done, it supports ripping games to the hard drive, it can browse the internet, the only reason I can see to mod it, would be to restore playability for PS2/PS1 games.
