Sony revealed an updated PlayStation 5 design on October 10th, 2023. Sony says their new PS5—unofficially dubbed the PS5 Slim—has been "reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models." Besides for slimming down, the PS5 Slim notably gains a modular disc drive, allowing Digital Edition buyers to purchase the disc drive separately for $79 to install after the fact if they so choose.

The PS5 Slim's hardware is largely unchanged from the PS5. Notably, the PS5 Slim starts at 1 TB of internal storage and has two USB-C front I/O ports instead of one USB-C and one USB-A.

The new PS5 Digital Edition costs $449 and the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive costs $499.

Sony says that "a variety of PS5 Console Cover colors for the new model will be available starting in early 2024," including matte black, red, blue, or silver for $54 each. Additionally, a vertical stand will be sold separately for $29.

The PS5 Slim adopts a similar design language to its older and bigger "original" PS5 brother, albeit smaller. There are now four cover panel sections instead of two, with the top two finished in glossy white and the bottom two matte. Unlike it's predecessor, the PS5 Slim has two USB-C ports on the front, as well as a power button.
