Fails To Charge
The speaker will either not charge or has a very short battery life.
Defective Charging Port
Often times, dust and debris get caught in the port and causes poor connection between the port and the adapter. You can clean out the port by blowing gently into the port opening to clear out dust. If this does not work, carefully try using a can of compressed air to clean it out.
Faulty Power Adapter
If the issue seems to lie with the power adapter, first check your power source (like the wall outlet) and make sure there is electricity present by plugging in a different device you know to be working. Also, check the cable or the connector for any visible damage. If it appears that the adapter is damaged, replace it with a new one.
Unreliable Battery
Over time, the battery may have deteriorated and therefore lost it's ability to hold a charge. If this is the case, follow this guide to replace your battery.
Distorted Audio
Audio coming from the speakers is distorted by static, clicking noises, or humming. Audio may also be hard or impossible to hear.
Bluetooth Not Connecting
Make sure the two devices are within Bluetooth range (average is 10 meters). If not, move them closer until they reconnect. If they do not reconnect and the connecting device is known to have working Bluetooth, the circuit board in the speaker may need to be replaced, which is explained in this guide, or the Bluetooth antenna may need replacing, which is shown in this guide.
Dirty Speakers
The speakers could be dirty or clogged with dust that could alter the sound quality. If this is the case, try gently wiping dust and dirt away with a non-alcohol based cleaner and a paper towel.
Broken Speakers
If there is no sound, the speakers are most likely broken, whether it is the speaker itself or because the rubber foam is damaged due to wear and tear or drying out. Both of these issues would cause distorted audio or no audio to be present. Follow this guide to replace the speakers. If the speakers seem to be in good condition (i.e. not damaged rubber), the problem is most likely in the circuit board. Follow this guide to replace the circuit board.
Control Buttons Do Not Work
One or more of the control buttons does not function (i.e. won't change volume, power on or off, connect to Bluetooth).
Faulty Buttons
One or more buttons is unresponsive and fails to operate correctly. It is likely to be a faulty control board, so to replace it, follow this guide.
Worn Out Buttons
Overuse of the buttons may cause them to wear out the rubber and therefore won't function correctly. The proper contact needed between the control board and the buttons is no longer there, so the rubber button ring would need replacing. Follow this guide to do so.

Operates while attached to charging unit but as soon as disconnected it stops. The unit is less than a year old, could it be faulty battery? And if so where or how can I replace the battery?

Have the same issue. Plays whilst plugged in but once it's on battery life it lasts all of 10 minutes. Device is about a year old. Got it last Xmas as a gift.

I’m having a similar problem. I’ve used my harman/kardon with my MacBook Pro daily, 8 to 10 hours a day, since I bought the speaker in February. Just this week, though, the audio with the speaker is distorted intermittently, whether I’m streaming from the web or playing tunes in my iTunes library. Haven’t tried it with the phone but will now. Anyone have a solution to this problem Teja and I share?

I sound like the others… but exactly the same thing happened to mine! Lol it fell, & now it sounds like $@$*. Reading all these probs makes me think h/k onyx is a lemon. cuz mine would only play music for 15 mins on a full charge. Very bummed out cuz it used to sound great! Anyways.. Jeff Riles~

I had my Onyx Studio 5 for 4 years and it broke down just now , Oct 2023….4 years old.. I checked everything and it is the IC ( Integrated circuitry inside which broke down.. no replacement available in the current market.. for its price ?? .. my cheap Brookstone Bluetooth still runs good and it is now 7 yrs old…
