Dell Chromebook 13-7310 Troubleshooting
This troubleshooting page will help you diagnose and resolve problems with your Dell Chromebook 13-7310
Camera Does not Work
Camera does not work or an error message appears saying “No camera found."
Camera Not Working
If this problem occurs, it is because the software connected to the camera is faulty. Try opening another application that uses the camera, such as Skype, and if it works then uninstall and reinstall the original application that had the issue. If it still doesn’t work then check the drivers are properly updated. If the above don’t work then back up your data and reset the Chromebook to its factory settings and recover your data.
If using the camera in several different programs fails, try to reset and recover the Chromebook. If the camera still does not work, the camera can be replaced using this guide.
Computer Runs Excessively Slow
Computer is running slowly or fails to run files. Occasionally, black screen of death errors occur.
Viruses have Slowed the Device
Scan your drive scanned with antivirus software. In many cases, malware and viruses can slow your computer down to almost a standstill.
Too Many Start Up Applications
You may also need to try cleaning out applications from the Chromebook that require a lot of power to run or start up. It is always advised to review all your programs manually to get rid of unnecessary processes running in the background. To uninstall programs use this guide.
Black Screen of Death Errors Result of Faulty Software
If the black screen of death appears, the first step would be to try turning your computer off and on again to restart it. If that doesn’t work, you may be able to install the Windows base drive and try booting it up with that. It might give you an option to repair Windows in which the software might be able to repair itself. Failing this, you can consult with a software expert, but as with the previous two problems, the solution is likely that the SSD needs replacing.
SSD is Disconnected
If turning the power on and off again to restart your device doesn’t fix the issue, you can replace the SSD using this guide. The first thing that would need to be investigated is the connection from the SSD to ensure that it is still intact. If not, reconnect it by using this guide and see it that fixes the problem. Before deciding if it is a faulty SSD, try running it in another computer if one is available. If similar problems occur, you may need to replace the SSD.
Keyboard is Sticky
Keys are sticking and/or unresponsive.
Grime In-Between the Keys
Cleaning the keys is an easy fix for sticky key problems. First, shut down your Chromebook and shake loose any debris that may be hiding in the keyboard. If you have a can of compressed air, spray it over the keys to loosen anything potentially stuck between the keys. The keys can safely be wiped down with alcohol, or a special technology-friendly wipe if you want to be very careful. Sometimes you may take off the keycaps to clean underneath. Key Caps are Broken
If cleaning the keys doesn’t work, you may need to replace the keys. If so, reference our keyboard replacement guide.
Touchpad not Responding
Touchpad lags or is simply unresponsive.
If the touchpad is frozen, try performing a hard reset on the Chromebook by holding the power button and then turning it back on. Next, make sure the touchpad is free of dust and debris that could be slowing its response time. If the touchpad is still unresponsive, press the escape key repeatedly. It is also possible that the touchpad might have come disconnected; if this is the case then follow our replacement guide to check for and resolve this issue if so. Finally, if the touchpad is not disconnected and is still not working properly, replace the touchpad with a new one using this guide.
Screen/Touchscreen not Working
Screen is unresponsive to commands.
If the touchscreen is responding poorly, it could be because it needs to be cleaned. This can be done easily by wiping it off with an electronics approved glass cleaner.
Software Needs to be Reset
Reset the Chromebook by holding the power button down until off. If the screen appears dark or is not displaying, use an HDMI cord and connect to a desktop monitor. To show the current display on a separate monitor, confirm that the Chromebook is powered on and hold down the CTRL button, along with the MAXIMIZE WINDOW key (F4). If content displays on second screen then the Chromebook screen may need to be replaced.
Ribbons are not Seated Properly
Before taking the final step to a new screen, disassemble the device following this guide and confirm that the ribbon cable is properly seated.
Motherboard Fan does not Work Properly
Motherboard fan does not run, or runs loudly.
Motherboard Fan is Clogged
If the fan becomes clogged with debris or dust, then you need to open the computer and clean the fan out. This will help ensure the fan keeps the computer cool and does not damage the motherboard. You can find the guide here to help get to the fan and clean.
Motherboard Fan Quit Running
If the motherboard fans quit running, then you will want to replace the fan so that the computer does not overheat and damage the Motherboard. You can find the guide here to replace the fan.
Computer will not Charge
Computer will not charge or will only charge a small portion
Over Voltage Protection
If you used the right-side USB port to charge another device,, then you might have flipped the Over Voltage Protection. You will need to unplug and replug in your battery. You can find the guide here to do that. Using the left side USB port for charging of other devices will ensure this does not happen.
Check Charger and Outlet
If your computer will not charge, then you first need to check your charger and the outlet to make sure they are both in working condition. First plug the charger in, if there is a light, then let the computer charge for one hour before turning on. If there is not a light, then trying using the charger on another device to see if it works. One could also move to another outlet to make sure the outlet is in working order.
If the charger and outlet are good and you still cannot charge you computer, then the battery may be bad. You can find the guide to replace the battery here.
Checking the Health of the Battery
If your computer is having trouble charging, or only charging a small portion, you might need to check the health of your battery. As time goes on a computers battery degrades. Checking the battery health is simple. Open a cross shell by pressing Ctrl+Alt+t. Type in “battery_test” and wait 5 minutes for test to complete. If your computer is less than 80% battery health, then the battery should be replaced. You can find the guide to replace a battery here.
Bluetooth Devices Not Connecting
Bluetooth devices are not connecting or are spotty.
Bluetooth is Turned Off
If there are issues connecting different devices to the Chromebook, first make sure that the Bluetooth connectivity is on. Click on the bottom right corner of the desktop where the submenu is located then click “Enable Bluetooth”. Sometimes, you may be required to rescan for device or connect to a new one. It may take time for the device to show up on the Chromebook’s bluetooth radar.
Device isn’t Updated
Follow this guide to make sure your device is updated.
Cord Connected Devices Not Connecting
Devices that require a cord are not showing up or won’t charge
If a device that needs to be connected through an adapter or cord of some sort does not register as being connected to the Chromebook, it is probably defective. You will know this if the headphone jack jiggles when something is plugged in. The best course of action would be to contact the customer support.
Internet is not Working or is Slow
Internet sites are taking too long to load or won’t load at all.
Airplane Mode is On
If the airplane mode is on, the internet will not work at all. Check the left of your taskbar and, if you see a small airplane symbol then your airplane mode is on. Turn it off then make sure to connect to your router.
Router or ISP (Internet service provider) is Not Working
If you believe the router is not working, test the internet on another device. If the device connects and is able to load sites like google or gmail then it is not your Router or ISP. If another device does not connect then you should unplug the router and modem for 10 seconds and plug it back in.
Too many Programs Open
If too many programs are open, the entire computer will run slower than normal. Open task manager and make sure only the browser and the task manager is running, then test the internet by opening legitimate sites like google.com or gmail.com.
Network Card is Broken
If the above did not work the issue is most likely your Network card. This model is notorious for broken network cards and if the problem is not software (like the above) then the issue is hardware. The guide to replace the network card can be found here.
